Styling Narrow Spaces with Contemporary Living Room Furniture
Styling Narrow Spaces with Contemporary Living Room Furniture
Fitting in contemporary living room furniture in a long and narrow space can be a challenge. Some people are not used to entertaining in a corridor-like space. But this doesn’t always have to be the case! Here are some tips and tricks to help make your space look better.
Easy Design Tips for Long, Narrow Spaces
Turn the long, narrow space in your house into a family area, and enjoy a living room that’s uniquely your own. Follow these tips:
- Divide your room into zones.
If you have a long living space, you can further divide it into smaller areas. For instance, you can use one part of the room for home entertainment, where you can place the sofa, rug, and television. On the other part of the room, you can create a den-like space, where you can put the seats and bookshelves.
- Switch up your furniture layout.
Don’t crowd all of your furniture in one space. Use the length of the room to your advantage by positioning your furniture alternately along it. Put your sofa near one corner, a table on the other end, and chairs in alternating positions. The arrangement will give the room a bigger and spacious effect.
- Put a perpendicular object in the room.
Instead of using one long sofa against the wall, use a sectional sofa from high-end furniture stores and put it in the corner. This arrangement will break up the tunnel-like illusion of the room. As an alternative, you can set up a regular long sofa against the wall, and put your side chairs in a perpendicular position to it.
- Make use of round furniture pieces.
To counteract the straight lines of the room, use furniture with soft, round shapes. For example, place a circular coffee table to go against the grain of the long room, making it appear wider. Put in round light fixtures and side tables for a better effect.
- Position everything in the center.
By putting every furniture piece in the middle, you can create the illusion of a bigger space. Place sofas, chairs, and coffee tables in the middle, facing each other. Put shelves or tables at each end, and see how big the room will appear.
Narrow Space, No Problem!
While most people prefer a wide area for entertaining guests, a narrow space shouldn’t stand in the way of a great living room. By following the aforementioned tips and adding a pinch of creativity, you can make unconventional spaces into a highly desirable living room.
